Welcome

This is the chronicle of our journey through the 21st century and our exploration and implementation of a greener lifestyle for our family. We are a family of four humans in suburban St Louis, Missouri, USA. We have always been Earth-conscious but have become even more aware recently of all of the things we can be doing to not only leave a smaller carbon footprint behind but to also increase our sustainable use of our land and resources to work and live in harmony with the earth and so have decided to embark on this journey to change our lives in many of those ways.

The Berry & Herb Bed

The plot before dirt....

After first round of dirt.

After second round of dirt!
This is a section we hadn't planned on necessarily adding now but it has been in the back of our heads for years.  The two round circles have peppermint in them(have had it for several years) and there are multiple Mulberry bushes along the fence.  We would like to add other berry bushes and more herbs as well...I'll keep you posted on what we choose!

The Back Plot

Introducing......The Back Plot...formerly known as the original garden plot :)

The empty beds in place.

After the first round of dirt.

Filled and ready to be planted!
We planted bed 6 with more tomatoes, onions, carrots, eggplants, lettuce and spinach.  The lettuce and spinach we are going to try to have as a continual planting and therefore producing crop throughout the summer so it is being stagger planted in the bed...we'll see how it works!
Bed 7 is planted with potatoes, 6 varieties even and then Kamut wheat from Egypt and hull-less oats..this is gonna fun!!!

The Oak Plot

The original plot

With the beds in place

After the first round of dirt.

After tamping and more dirt.
We are going to plant peppers and peas in bed 3, corn & squash & beans(3sisters style) & cucumbers in bed 4 and corn & squash & melons & zucchini in bed 5.  These beds have not been planted but will be next..once it stops raining again!  We are staggering planting 4 &5 though, so as to give 4 more sun and growth before there is height in bed 5!

Phase 1

Sunday we papered the paths in between the beds and planned the berry & herb garden in the corner.  That has been something I have been dreaming of doing for years and I can't wait for it to come true!  It is already started by the fact that we have a veritible forest of Mulberry bushes growing all along our fences.  We did not discover that they were Mulberries until last year and in fact had been trying to kill them off for almost 9 years....obviously they are quite the hardy bush!!!!

Phase 0

We have always planted a garden plot in our back yard.  It has been 8x10 and it has yielded wonderful tomatoes every time and a few other things as we have experimented over the years.  This year we have decided to be bold and completely think outside the box as far as our garden space.  We are going from 80 square feet of garden to over 500!!!!  It is going to be quite different and we're hoping a food revolution of sorts for ourselves.  We have always strived to eat a balanced diet and be as healthy as we can within our limitations of location and food availability and this is an opportunity for us to not have to depend on others for that but to be able to grow, eat, can and savor our own food on a much larger scale and we can't wait!

So here it is that we start.  This is the front and back yards before we have placed the raised garden beds.
